Sotterley Slave Cabin Stabilization

Residential Architect Edenton, NC

Limited intervention as required to repair and conserve unique but fragile one and a half story plank framed and buttressed cabin from c. 1840’s, the only surviving example of several that were sited below the Sotterley Plantation House in Hollywood, Maryland. Involved extensive epoxy repairs to stabilize original wall planks, as well as in-kind replacement/borate treatment of sill logs. Exterior walls and posts were coated with lime (white) wash preservative. Also included construction of new dry stone retaining walls to stabilize adjacent embankment, and repointing of masonry chimney.
Mr. Lees worked closely with representatives of the Maryland Historic Trust, who furnished grant funding for the project.
